PICSPIRATION SUNDAY: Norway´s capital city offers some great opportunities for amazing night photography. Here are two of the best spots to put up your tripod.
I like night photography in cities. It can just be very nice to stand at interesting viewpoints with my tripod – and it is also quite challenging to make all the different light sources play well together in the photo.
Oslo, where I have worked for many years, is definitely one of my favorite cities for this kind of photography, especially as the new city area Bjørvika is developing.
This photo is of the well-known Barcode buildings, maybe the most photographed Oslo skyline. Each of the buildings have a cool architecture – and together they form an amazing skyline.
I thought I would share some of my own night photos from Oslo this Sunday. I have explained earlier how I take this kind of photos.
Where to photograph the Oslo skyline
For starters here are two very good photo locations if you want to take night photos in Oslo:
- Ekebergåsen – with one of the best views over Oslo. Right in front of the Ekeberg restaurant is a good spot to put up your tripod.
- Sørenga – a short walk from the Oslo Opera House. Here you find the best view of the Barcode building. The main photo in this article is taken from this location.
You find the exact locations I used in the Google Maps at the bottom of this article.

Ferry leaving Oslo. The photo is taken from the rooftop of Postgirobygget – and is composed of a series of 5 minutes exposures. All in all it covered the ferry trip for around 40 minutes. Photo: John Einar Sandvand
